Migrant visas to fill Australia’s skills shortage

Australia’s skilled migration visa program aims to attract qualified migrants to fill positions where there is a shortage of certain skills in Australia.

Your visa options

Subclass 189 – Skilled Independent visa

This is a permanent residence visa for workers who have the skills needed in Australia. You don’t need to be sponsored or nominated. But you must be invited to apply. To be invited, you must be under the age of 45 and have an occupation that is in demand according to the Australian government’s skills list.

Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated visa

This visa allows nominated skilled workers to live and work in Australia as permanent residents. You must be invited to apply. To be invited, you must have an occupation on the Australian government skills list and satisfy a points test.

Subclass 186 – Employer Nomination Scheme visa

Skilled workers must be nominated by their employer in order to live and work in Australia permanently. Your occupation must be on the list of eligible skilled occupations and you must have at least competent English.

Subclass 491 – Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa

This is a visa for skilled people nominated by a state or territory government to live and work in regional Australia for up to 5 years if they have an occupation on the relevant skills occupation list. Visa holders may apply for permanent residence after 3 years.

Subclass 494 – Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa

Regional employers who have identified a labour shortage in their region, and they cannot source an appropriately skilled Australian worker, can sponsor a skilled migrant worker. Visa holders must live and work in a designated regional area of Australia only and may apply permanent residence after 3 years.
